Issue One Action urges swift passage of the Electoral Count Reform Act of 2022 in new ad blitz

Washington, DC – August 2, 2022 –  Issue One Action today announced a new $55,000 digital advertising blitz to help bolster the case for modernizing the Electoral Count Act ahead of tomorrow’s Senate Rules Committee hearing about newly introduced bipartisan legislation that would update the 1887 law that governs how Congress counts Electoral College votes every four years on January 6th.

“It’s time to protect our elections. Tell Congress to update the Electoral Count Act,” read the new ads, which will appear on the webpages of The Hill, New York Times, Politico, and Washington Post. The ads will run in the Washington, D.C., area throughout the week.

“The Electoral Count Reform Act of 2022 is a meaningful and bipartisan step forward that will protect U.S. elections and insulate our country from a constitutional crisis following future presidential elections. Until Congress passes a full and comprehensive update to the Electoral Count Act, our country will remain vulnerable to future chaos and attacks on our democracy. It is encouraging to see the Senate move quickly to strengthen our constitutional guardrails,” said Issue One Action CEO Nick Penniman.

Tomorrow, the Senate Rules Committee will convene a hearing focused on the need to reform the Electoral Count Act. In addition to expert witness testimony, the committee will hear from Senators Susan Collins (R-ME) and Joe Manchin (D-WV), who led a bipartisan Senate working group committed to this important issue that recently introduced legislation with strong bipartisan support.

"The Senate's bipartisan work updating the Electoral Count Act has been a model of across-the-aisle collaboration from the very beginning of the process. We applaud the ideas that have been captured in the legislation and are hopeful that modest improvements will be made as the Senate Rules Committee moves forward. Passing this bill will be one of the most important actions the Congress can take to insure a peaceful transfer of power in future elections," said former Ambassador Tim Roemer (D-IN).

Added former Rep. Zach Wamp (R-TN): "Senators Klobuchar and Blunt — with the support of Senators Collins, Manchin, and so many others — are in a fantastic position to help accomplish something truly extraordinary for our country by solidifying meaningful, lasting improvements to the way future counts of Electoral College votes occur. They should be commended for their leadership crafting these changes in an inclusive and bipartisan manner."

Both Roemer and Wamp are also members of the National Council on Election Integrity, a bipartisan project of Issue One, that last month praised the Electoral Count Reform Act of 2022 as a “significant step forward that will help protect against a constitutional crisis following future presidential elections and help ensure the peaceful transfer of power.”
